What is DNA Testing?

If you've ever wondered what it means when a breeder says their cats are "DNA tested," you're not alone. T his page will explain the basics of genetic testing, what the results mean, and how responsible breeders use this information to help produce healthy, well-planned litters.

At Treska Maine Coons, the health of our cats is one of our highest priorities. DNA testing helps us make informed breeding decisions by identifying whether a cat carries certain inherited genetic conditions or traits.

A DNA test does not tell us if a cat is "good" or "bad." Instead, it tells us which genetic variants a cat has inherited. Using this information, responsible breeders can select breeding pairs that reduce the risk of producing affected kittens while preserving the health and genetic diversity of the breed.

Our cats are tested through accredited laboratories for conditions and traits known to occur in Maine Coons.

What does the DNA test tell us?

  • A DNA report provides valuable information about a cat's genetic health and inherited traits. Depending on the test, results may indicate that a cat is:

    • Clear: No disease-causing variant was detected for the condition tested.
    • Carrier: The cat carries one copy of a genetic variant but is not expected to develop the associated recessive disease. Responsible breeders can use this information to select appropriate breeding pairs and avoid producing affected kittens.
    • At Risk: The cat has inherited the genetic variant(s) associated with a particular condition and may be at risk of developing that disease, depending on the specific disorder.
    • Trait Results: DNA testing also identifies inherited traits such as coat color, pattern, dilution, white spotting, and other characteristics that help determine a cat's appearance.

    It's important to remember that DNA testing is just one part of a cat's overall health assessment. Responsible breeders combine genetic testing with veterinary care, pedigree evaluation, health screening, and careful breeding practices to produce healthy, well-adjusted kittens.

Why do responsible breeders use DNA testing?

DNA testing allows breeders to:

  • Make informed breeding decisions
  • Reduce the risk of inherited disease
  • Preserve valuable bloodlines and genetic diversity
  • Produce healthier kittens for future generations

It's important to understand that a carrier is not a sick cat. Eliminating every carrier from breeding programs would unnecessarily reduce the genetic diversity of the breed. Instead, ethical breeders use DNA results responsibly by selecting compatible breeding pairs.

DNA testing is only one piece of the puzzle.

While DNA testing is an invaluable tool, it cannot detect every possible disease or health concern. Responsible breeding also includes:

  • Regular veterinary care
  • Health screening and physical examinations
  • Careful pedigree evaluation
  • Maintaining excellent nutrition and husbandry
  • Selecting cats with sound temperament and structure
  • Screening for HCM with echocardiogram
  • Screening for hip dysplasia with routine Xrays

Together, these practices help produce healthy, well-socialized Maine Coons that meet the breed standard.

Common Genetic Conditions Screened in Maine Coons

Condition What It Is Why It Matters
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) An inherited heart disease that causes thickening of the heart muscle. Can lead to heart failure, arrhythmias, or sudden death. DNA testing helps identify known genetic variants, but regular cardiac screening is still recommended.
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) A genetic disorder affecting the nerves that control muscle movement. Affected cats may develop muscle weakness and an abnormal gait. DNA testing allows breeders to avoid producing affected kittens.
Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKDef) An inherited enzyme deficiency that affects red blood cells. Can cause intermittent anemia. Responsible breeding prevents affected kittens while maintaining healthy genetic diversity.
Factor XII Deficiency An inherited clotting factor deficiency. Generally causes a prolonged clotting test (aPTT) but does not usually cause spontaneous or excessive bleeding.
Blood Type Determines whether a cat has Type A, B, or AB blood. Blood typing is important for safe transfusions and to help prevent neonatal isoerythrolysis in kittens.
Coat Color & Traits DNA identifies genes for coat color, patterns, white spotting, dilution, and other inherited traits. Helps breeders predict the colors and patterns that may appear in future litters.

Please note: DNA testing identifies many known genetic variants but cannot detect every inherited disease or predict every future health condition. Responsible breeding also includes regular veterinary care, cardiac screening, pedigree evaluation, and careful selection of breeding pairs.
