Caring For Your Maine Coon Kitten

Bringing home your newest family member is so exciting but there are things you'll need to know.

Their New Home...

Bringing your Maine Coon kitten home is an exciting time for both you and your new Treska Maine Coon. To help make the transition smooth, it’s important to give your kitten time, patience, and a safe space to adjust.

Start by setting up a quiet room with everything they need — a litter box, food and water dishes, cozy bedding, and toys. This helps them feel secure as they get used to new sights, sounds, and smells. Gradually allow them to explore more of your home once they seem confident and curious.

Feed them the same food provided by Treska Maine Coons for the first week before slowly transitioning to any new diet. Keep fresh water available at all times, and avoid cow’s milk — it can upset their stomach. Maine Coons are smart and social, so spend time gently playing and talking with your kitten each day to build trust and confidence.

Schedule your first vet visit within a week of bringing your kitten home to establish care and continue vaccinations. Grooming is also key — Maine Coons have beautiful coats that benefit from regular brushing to prevent tangles and reduce shedding.

Most importantly, give them love and patience. Every kitten settles in at their own pace, but with gentle consistency and care, your new Maine Coon will soon feel like they’ve always been part of the family.

A Simple Checklist

Before Bringing Kitten Home

  • Prepare a quiet, safe room (bedroom, office, or small space)
  • Set up litter box, food and water dishes, and a cozy bed
  • Place scratching post and toys in the space
  • Double-check that all windows and vents are secure
  • Remove small objects or cords that could be chewed or swallowed

First 24 Hours

  • Keep the environment calm and quiet — no loud introductions
  • Let your kitten explore their room at their own pace
  • Offer the same food used by the breeder
  • Provide fresh water and clean litter daily
  • Spend short, gentle play sessions to build trust

Days 2–7

  • Gradually introduce your kitten to other rooms and family members
  • Schedule your first vet appointment for a health check and vaccine review
  • Begin light grooming sessions (a soft brush and gentle voice go a long way)
  • Continue feeding the breeder’s diet, then transition slowly if desired
  • Provide safe climbing spots — Maine Coons love vertical spaces
  • Start getting them used to gentle nail trims and handling

Ongoing Care

  • Brush your kitten’s coat 2–3 times per week to prevent tangles
  • Offer puzzle feeders or interactive toys for mental stimulation
  • Maintain regular veterinary checkups and vaccinations
  • Keep your Maine Coon indoors only for safety and health
  • Give daily affection and playtime — Maine Coons thrive on companionship

From our home to yours, thank you for sharing in our love of the magnificent Maine Coon.
